Online communities, and in fact people at large have been insisting since time immemorial, that bad things always happen in threes. When it comes to celebrity deaths, this superstition rings true. It is believed that this curse of three started when Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper died together in a plane crash in 1959.
Those who are still sceptic about this, there’s concrete proof that there is something evil about the number 3.
Here’s when tragic celebrity deaths have happened in threes:
- Ruby Dee, actress, writer, and civil rights activist bid goodbye to the world on June 11, 2015 due to natural causes at the age of 91. Just 4 days later, Casey Kasem, radio icon and the inimitable host of the American Top 40 Countdown died in a Washington State Hospital owing to complications arising out of dementia. Less than a week after Casey passed away, Tony Gwynn, the much loved baseball star passed away when his heart unexpectedly stopped while he went for a run. He was all of 54 then.
- In early January this year, legendary rock star David Bowie lost an 18 month battle to cancer. It came as a huge shock to his fans. In less than a week after Bowie’s death, Alan Rickman, famous for his role as Professor Severus Snape passed away from Cancer. Later the same day, the world got another shock when it was announced that René Angélil, singer Céline Dion’s husband too lost his battle with Cancer. Cancer was unforgiving this year!
- 2016 proved to be the worst year for celebrity deaths. It did not stop at Bowie. Doris Roberts, the American stage actress, author and philanthropist lost her life on April 17, 2016. Everybody loves Raymond fans were heartbroken with the news. Shortly after, on April 20, ex WWE wrestler, Chyna died of an accidental sleeping pill overdose. A day later, came another shocker. Music legend, Prince died at the age of 57 due to an accidental drug overdose.
We can only hope we don’t see any more beloved celebrities being cursed this deadly year. And we hope that the celebrity deaths in threes phenomenon is indeed just a coincidence.
